Le panda roux – Ailurus fulgens – est originaire de l’ouest de l’Himalaya (principalement au Népal, Inde, Chine et Bhoutan). Il vit entre 2200 et 4800 mètres d’altitude.

Il vit dans les forêts tempérées où il se nourrit surtout de bambou mais aussi de baies, de fleurs et, parfois, d’œufs et d’oisillons. Il se déplace dans les arbres. Il ne les quitte que pour passer à un autre arbre.

C’est un animal solitaire, nocturne (ou crépusculaire) et territorial. Il ne se rapproche d’un ou d’une congénère qu’à la période de reproduction. La gestation dure un peu plus de 4 mois. La femelle donne naissance à 2 petits, parfois jusqu’à 4.

Le mâle est un peu plus gros que la femelle.

C’est une espèce en danger en raison de la fragmentation de son territoire par l’intervention de l’homme

Deux anecdotes concernant le panda roux :

• Le nom « Panda » signifierait « mangeur de bambou ».
• -Le panda roux a donné son nom au navigateur web « Firefox ». En effet, ce mot anglais « Firefox » signifie en langage courant « panda roux ». Il est vrai que ce logo ressemble plus à un renard stylisé qu’un panda roux stylisé. Mais c’est ainsi.

The Red Panda – Ailurus fulgens – is native to the western Himalayas (mainly in Nepal, India, China and Bhutan). He lives between 2200 and 4800 meters of altitude.

It lives in temperate forests where it feeds mainly on bamboo but also on berries, flowers and sometimes eggs and chicks. He moves through the trees. He only leaves them to move to another tree.

It is a solitary, nocturnal (or twilight) and territorial animal. It only approaches one or another congener during the breeding period. The gestation lasts a little more than 4 months. The female gives birth to 2 young, sometimes up to 4.

The male is a little bigger than the female.

It is an endangered species due to the fragmentation of its territory by human intervention

Two anecdotes about the red panda:

–  The name « Panda » would mean « bamboo eater ».

–  The red panda gave its name to the web browser «Firefox». Indeed, this English word «Firefox» means in common language «red panda». It is true that this logo looks more like a stylized fox than a stylized red panda. But that’s how it is.
