Un grand oiseau mais encore un plus grand voilier, voici le héron au long bec emmanché d’un long cou.

Le héron cendré – Ardea cinerea – est une espèce commune que l’on voit un peu partout en France. Celui-ci a été photographié sur le lac Léman en janvier.

S’il préfère les eaux douces poissonneuses et les zones humides, il n’hésite pas à se poser dans un champ pour y trouver des campagnols ou autres rongeurs. Il viendra aussi dans les prairies y manger quelques grenouilles ou serpents. 

Il niche dans de grands arbres où il construira un nid dans la canopée. Parfois, il va nicher dans une roselière.

Le héron cendré est grand. Il mesure quasiment 1 mètre de long pour une envergure de près de 2 mètres (175 cm en général). Il est le plus grand héron en Europe.

À titre de comparaison, le héron Goliath – Ardea goliath – qui vit principalement en Afrique, mesure 140 cm pour une envergure de 230 cm.

La grande aigrette – Ardea alba – qui vit aussi en Afrique et en Europe est plus grande que le héron cendré (104 cm) mais d’une envergure plus modeste (170 cm).

The Grey Heron – Ardea cinerea – is a common species that can be seen almost everywhere in France. This one was photographed on Lake Geneva in January.

If he prefers fresh waters full of fish and wetlands, he does not hesitate to land in a field to find voles or other rodents. He will also come to the meadows to eat some frogs or snakes.

It nests in tall trees where it will build a nest in the canopy. Sometimes, it goes to nest in a reedbed.

The Grey Heron is large. It’s almost 1 meter long with a wingspan of nearly 2 meters (175 cm). It is the largest heron in Europe.

For comparison, the Goliath Heron – Ardea goliath – which lives mainly in Africa, is 140 cm long and has a wingspan of 230 cm.

The Great Egret – Ardea alba – which also lives in Africa and Europe is larger than the Grey Heron (104 cm) but of a more modest size (170 cm).
